In the 1980 USSR, Varlam Shalamov, author of the notorious Kolyma Tales, is warned to stop writing as he experiences his final days. Meanwhile, two other men are on an obsessive search for Shalamov’s handwritten account of life in the labor camps—and nothing will stop them from publishing the scandalous masterpiece. Flashbacks of the harrowing true stories simultaneously tell the story of Shalamov’s life. Based on true events.
